Murray wants answers on landfill aftercare costs for the county

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray wants to know if Mayo County Council has made provisions to fund the aftercare costs of both landfills in Mayo which are due to close soon. Cllr Murray raised the issue at Monday's meeting of Mayo County Council and demanded a report from the council on whether it had built into the charges full disposal costs to waste collectors including aftercare costs, which he said he believed could be up on €750,000 per year for more than 30 years.

Almost €19 million allocated for road and bridge projects in Mayo

The Government announced almost €19 million for roadworks and bridge projects yesterday which will be used on many specific projects around the county. Welcoming the announcement of the allocation, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, said: “I am delighted to announce the allocation of €18,927,613 which includes funding for restoration improvement [€9,740,161], restoration maintenance [€2,741,647], discretionary grants [€4,558,280], bridge rehabilitation [€584,525], specific improvement grants [€600,000], safety improvement works [€521,000], speed limits [€87,000], and training grants [€95,000]. The funding will be used by Mayo County Council for a number of specific improvements on regional and local roads. Residents in many of these areas have been campaigning for funding for these projects for some time, and I am delighted to be able to announce this funding."

Swinford Tidy Towns

Mayo County Council is once again this year providing free Christmas tree recycling in Mayo. Christmas tree recycling in Swinford will be provided for at the council depot on Kilkelly road only. In Swinford and surrounding areas, trees will be accepted until tomorrow, Saturday January 16. Ensure all decorations are removed from Christmas trees prior to recycling. Over the festive season households in Mayo are set to produce almost 1,500 tonnes of waste — that is equivalent to 1,500 small family cars. The EPA is appealing to residents to take action and make a New Year’s resolution to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

€480,000 in flood relief works being sought for Ballina

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has said this week that €480,000 funding is being sought to build a flood barrier at Bachelors Walk in Ballina to prevent flooding from the River Moy. The news comes following a meeting of Deputy Mulherin, Junior Minister with Special responsibility for the OPW Simon Harris, and Mayo County Council officials.

South Mayo still suffering from flood waters

The village of Cong in particular is still suffering because of the flooding that first occurred last December. At the January meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District of Mayo County Council, director of services Paddy Mahon outlined in a presentation the areas that have been affected and the efforts the council has made to keep things under control.
